Most Embarrassing Moments in Acceptance Speech History

Acceptance speeches are becoming somewhat of a laugh-riot in Hollywood. While some are intentionally funny, others are shameful and downright cringe-worthy.

Here are the top five most embarrassing acceptance speeches of all-time:

5. Jacqueline Bisset’s Confusing Ramble

It’s hard not feeling embarrassed for Jacqueline Bisset after train wrecking her acceptance speech at the 2014 Golden Globes. Awkward pauses, incoherent rambling, and an unexpected backhand compliment to her mother— it’s as if Bisset was trying to make this speech an instant classic.

Although she apologized later, she claims that hunger got the best of her.

According to TV Line, Bisset confesses: “I was certainly surprised [to win], and I was completely out of it [just beforehand], thinking, ‘Where is my dinner?’ I still hadn’t gotten the dinner I was expecting.”

Even Ellen DeGeneres took to her Twitter for a little jesting.

4. Sally Field’s “You Like Me!” Speech

If there was ever any doubt that Sally Fields lacked confidence in her career, then this hilarious award moment is solid proof. Her famous 1985 Academy Award speech has been the subject of mockery for almost three decades, and it seems like the award-winning actress is growing tired of hearing about it.

“Let the darn thing go, will ya?” said Fields in an ABC 20/20 special (Gawker).

Perhaps we can’t just let it go because… we really like you, Sally!

3.    Mariah Carey’s Drunken “Spiel”

Somebody should have told Mariah Carey that alcohol and acceptance speeches don’t mix before she stumbled onto stage at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Clearly inebriated, an apologetic and giggly Carey begins her speech by hinting that she had too much to drink, as if it wasn’t already obvious.

“And please forgive me because I’m a little bit, um… yeah,” admits Carey.

In a tiresome and disinterested tone, the actress/singer concludes, “I thank you all for listening to my little spiel.”

No, Mariah. Thank you.

2.    Tom Hanks Accidentally Kicks Gay Teacher “Out of the Closet”

On the surface, actor Tom Hanks’ acceptance speech at the 1994 Oscars doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. But when the teary-eyed star thanks his gay high school drama teacher who had not yet come out, he unknowingly exposes a secret that sends shockwaves throughout his hometown of Oakland.

With such a face palm moment, you could argue that Hanks’ speech itself is worthy of an award.

1.    Kayne West Interrupts Taylor Swift’s Speech

It’s kind of difficult to continue an award speech when someone strips away your microphone to express disapproval. And that’s exactly what left viewers scratching their heads at the 2009 Video Music Awards.

Famed rapper, Kanye West, stormed the stage to raise his objections before country singer, Taylor Swift, could utter much more than a thanks. Although priceless for its shock value, this stunt is arguably one of the most embarrassing moments in acceptance speech history.
